Root Cause Analysis (MANDATORY)
⛔ Before implementing ANY fix, diagnose the root cause FIRST.
Do NOT attempt fixes until you understand WHY the problem exists. Band-aid fixes create technical debt, hide real bugs, and waste user time.
Step 1: Understand Expected vs Actual
Before touching code, be clear on:
- What should happen? (e.g., "tabs should be in a horizontal row")
- What is happening? (e.g., "tabs are stacking vertically")
If unclear, ask clarifying questions before proceeding.
Step 2: Identify the Affected Element/Code
- Identify the specific element, component, or code path involved
- Find the source file that renders/implements it
- Find ALL related files (CSS, parent components, shared utilities)
Step 3: Trace the Problem (UI/CSS Issues)
Before editing ANY CSS:

- Check data flow — trace where values come from
Step 5: Form a Hypothesis BEFORE Fixing
State explicitly:
- "The root cause is [X]"
- "Evidence: [what you found in steps 3-4]"
- "The fix is [specific single change]"
Step 6: Make ONE Targeted Fix
- Make ONE change that addresses the root cause
- Do NOT shotgun multiple changes hoping one works
- If the fix doesn't work, return to Step 3 — you missed something
Canonical Source Fidelity
⛔ When your task references specific source files, READ them before writing.
Do NOT generate field names, config shapes, table columns, or multi-step flows from conceptual understanding. LLMs produce plausible-but-wrong content that passes lint/typecheck but has incorrect names.
Trigger: Your task mentions specific files, line ranges, schemas, or says "match X" / "reproduce Y" / "document Z from source."
Required steps:
- READ every referenced source file before writing anything
- EXTRACT exact field names, column headers, enum values, and structure from the source
- REPRODUCE faithfully — do not rename fields, reorder columns, or "improve" the structure
- VERIFY after writing — re-read the source and diff against your output for mismatches
Failure pattern ("Plausible Fabrication"):

This matters because: Automated checks (typecheck, lint, build) cannot catch fabricated field names — the content is structurally valid but semantically wrong. Only source comparison catches it.
Band-Aid Pattern Detection
STOP and reconsider if your fix involves:

Common UI Root Cause Patterns

Anti-Patterns

Browser Testing (If Available)
For UI stories, verify in browser with available Playwright tooling:
- Navigate to relevant page
- Verify UI changes work
- Take screenshot if helpful
If Playwright automation tools are unavailable, run local Playwright tests/screenshots or note manual browser verification needed.
Diagnostic Logging for Browser Debugging
When Builder reports "user says feature doesn't work but tests pass", add targeted console.log statements to help identify the issue. This is part of Builder's Visual Debugging Escalation protocol.
1. Module-Level Version Marker
Add at the top of the file (outside functions) to verify code freshness:
